Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
